Overview

Abacus Technology is seeking a Sr. Systems Safety Engineer to provide technical support at Robins AFB.  This is a full-time position.

Responsibilities

  • Accomplish system safety engineering tasks to include risk assessment.
  • Assist in the system safety program for the assigned program(s) to ensure all systems procured are safe to operate and maintain.
  • Review and assist with the development of system safety program plans, hazard analyses, performing risk assessments, evaluating weapon system contractor safety proposals, evaluating safety concerns/issues of using and support commands, and assisting with the resolution of safety issues/risks.
  • Establish or use existing hazard tracking logs to track each hazard to closure, meaning until the last aircraft or document is modified/changed.
  • Organize, generate, and present the briefing charts, agenda, and minutes for system safety group meetings, and co-chair the meeting with the AF chief engineer and the program's prime contractor representative.
  • Maintain a file of all current mishap risk assessments and annually submit risk acceptance packages for risks with a ”high” or “serious” risk designation to the appropriate organization. 
  • Assist in mishap investigations as required, and shall assist with responding to the findings and recommendations in the mishap reports.
  • Assist with developing solutions to the findings and recommendations and reporting them through the appropriate channels to the Air Force Safety Center.
  • Participate in system safety working group meetings, as needed, to address and work to resolve specific system safety issues.
  • Support requests for deviations, waivers, and Configuration Control Board (CCB) meetings to ensure the safety of the aircraft systems and subsystems are not jeopardized by these actions.
  • Support all technical reviews and various program reviews, to assist with identifying and resolving any safety issues/concerns or transferring them over to the hazard database/log for resolution.
  • Participate in conferences and crisis management team meeting.
  • Assist with the identification of all safety non-compliances in regards to airworthiness and OSS&E.
  • Update all program safety recommendations in the Air Force Safety Automated System (AFSAS) every six months, in support of the mishap review panel.

Qualifications

15+ years experience in safety and systems engineering including at least 5 years supporting DoD programs.  Bachelor’s degree in a related field.  Able to apply an understanding of DoD, AF, and common engineering/scientific principles, processes, and procedures to improve performance and sustainability of existing and future AF and joint service weapon systems.  Thorough understanding of application software, operating systems, networks, storage platforms, and how they relate to system architecture.  Experience working on each stage of the system development life cycle from initiation through deployment/sustainment.  Demonstrated proficiency with process modeling and developing workflow diagrams.  Able to elicit and interpret requirements and translate to technical specifications/system design following best practices and design patterns.  Able to communicate with management, technical staff, and end users in a clear and professional manner.  Experience with engineering practices, techniques, and standards.  Excellent oral and written communication skills with the ability to develop and present technical presentations.  Able to represent complex data in diagrams or through other techniques that communicate precise information to both business and technical staff.  Proven ability to understand the strategic and tactical approach to projects and handle multiple projects concurrently.  Must be a US citizen and hold a current Secret clearance.
