  • Overview

    Abacus Technology is seeking a WAN Engineer to provide technical support for the Network Infrastructure Support Services (NISS) program at the Social Security Administration (SSA).  This is a full-time position. 

    Responsibilities

    Provide technical assistance with router issues during Tier 1 and Tier 2 activities (for all sites).  Work with users and inter-component workgroups to identify technological solutions to meet user LAN/WAN requirements and identify any impact of LAN/WAN as result of new requirements.  Perform proof of concepts – plan, design, test and implement.  Test and evaluate new and emerging technologies and products (include products other than Cisco).  Create evaluation criteria and document results.  Create, test, implement, and document new scripts for automating network updates.  Use SNMP based reporting tools to identify network operational performance and recommend network operational performance improvements to resolve reported issues.  Identify network operational performance and recommend network operational performance improvements.  Audit Layer 3 configurations (including Layer 3 switches that perform routing) to ensure conformity to SSA standards and policies.  Add and modify router configurations, including but not limited to, adding and removing devices, circuits and router tables.  Manage the deployment of new software and firmware releases that correct problems or increase functionality.  Provide technical assistance with VoIP issues.  Work with other SSA and vendor/3rd party engineers to diagnose and resolve VoIP problems.  React to network performance issues to ensure network Service Level agreements are met.  Work with engineers (both Contractor and SSA personnel) in transferring technical information and knowledge.  Take corrective action to fix root cause.  Troubleshoot and perform problem determination and resolution for all layer 3 problems, all routers, protocols, Video, VPN, wireless, NAC, VOIP, multi-casting, multiple carriers, and multiple data centers.  Plan, design, test, and update IOS and access-lists.  Apply hot fixes, patches and new code for Layer 3 devices.  Evaluate current network infrastructure, procedures, processes, and network traffic and recommend improvements.  Advise SSA management regarding problems – perform root cause analysis, present the problem, the solution, plans to avoid future problems, and a plan for how to implement the solution.  Develop implementation strategies, plans and processes for a nationwide rollout of any new network related or security product.  Develop Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for any network implementation initiative.

    Qualifications

    10+ years experience in LAN/WAN for networks consisting of at least 1000 sites.  Bachelor’s degree in a related field.  Must be CCIE certified.  Must have extensive experience with network configuration and implementation; scripted network changes, and documenting network requirements and standards development.  Experience with dual carrier MPLS networks and multiple data centers preferred.  Must have experience with network design, analysis, and troubleshooting.  Experience with network lab testing and developing network documentation.  Hands-on experience with Cisco 7600, 6500, 3900 routers and most access layer 2 switch platforms.  Experience with IPv4, IPv6, EIGRP, OSPF, BGP, QoS, IPSec, BFD, GRE, VPN, STP, SNMP, IP SLA and Multicast.  Experience with capture and analysis of network traffic.  Knowledge and experience with the following is desired: Python and Perl Scripting; Cisco ASA; Cisco networks; WAN technologies; LAN technologies such as Ethernet, wireless LAN as well as the physical media and equipment associated with each; IP routing protocols and implementations for BGP; and Quality of Service Classification and Implementation.  Able to demonstrate strong oral and written communication skills, with the ability to communicate technical topics to management and non-technical audiences, as well as interface with the customer on a daily basis.  Able to periodically provide after-hours and weekend support.  Must be able to obtain and maintain a US Public Trust clearance.  Must be US Citizen or US Permanent Resident (green card holder).
